ABOUT ME
Mr Gardner qualified from Southampton Medical School in 1999. He undertook his Orthopaedic training within the Wessex region and was awarded his certificate of completion of specialist training in September 2011.
Mr Gardner was appointed a substantive consultant at University Hospital Southampton in May 2016. He specialises in hip and knee surgery.
EXPERIENCE
A years fellowship in Western Australia cemented his interest in primary and revision hip and knee surgery. He developed a specialist interest in stiff and painful total knee replacements. A visiting fellowship to Toronto Canada revealed the arthroplasty techniques used in a leading hospital in North America.
On returning to the UK he completed a second fellowship in hip and knee surgery at Bournemouth Hospital, before continuing to work at Bournemouth as a consultant for 2 years. During this time he gained expertise in revision surgery for infections and metal on metal implants. He introduced enhanced recovery protocols to to improve patient outcomes following joint replacement surgery. This work led to him being shortlisted for a staff excellence award.
Research and Hobbies
His current research interests include peri-prosthetic fractures, infected arthroplasty and computer navigated fracture fixation. He has lectured internationally and is on the faculty teaching anatomy at Southampton.
Mr Gardner lives with his wife and young family in Hampshire and enjoys Sailing and Cycling.
